PhilGEOS 2023 Champions Geomatics for SDGs

PhilGEOS 2023, held on December 6–7 at UP Diliman, showcased the role of geomatics in sustainable development through expert talks, research presentations, and industry exhibits, fostering collaboration among academia, industry, and professionals.

The Philippine Geomatics Symposium (PhilGEOS) 2023 made a strong comeback on December 6–7 at the Institute of Biology, University of the Philippines Diliman, under the theme "Geomatics for Sustainable Development Towards a Better Future." Organized by the UP Department of Geodetic Engineering (UP DGE) and the UP Training Center for Applied Geodesy and Photogrammetry (UP TCAGP), the event underscored the crucial role of geomatics in addressing global challenges and advancing sustainable development.

Distinguished experts from around the world shared insights into the latest advancements in geomatics and its applications in achieving UNESCO's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The symposium served as a platform for students and professionals to present their research through oral and poster presentations. Industry leaders also showcased cutting-edge technologies, products, and services, fostering engagement between academia and industry.

PhilGEOS 2023 featured a diverse range of topics, including geospatial data acquisition, spatial analysis for sustainable development, remote sensing for environmental monitoring, and geomatics applications in disaster risk reduction and agriculture. The event facilitated collaboration among researchers, professionals, developers, and students, strengthening the role of geomatics in building a more sustainable and resilient future.

The organizing committee comprised faculty members and staff from the UP Department of Geodetic Engineering, led by Assoc. Prof. Ayin M. Tamondong, PhD, and Asst. Prof. Ma. Rosario Concepcion O. Ang, MSc, as co-chairs. Other key members included Assoc. Prof. Jeark A. Principe, PhD (Technical Committee Head), Asst. Prof. Bienvenido G. Carcellar III, MSc (Programs Committee Head), Asst. Prof. Trishia C. Guevara, MSc (Logistics Committee Head), and Engr. Ma. Bea Angela I. Zamora (Publicity Committee Head). The committee ensured the smooth execution of the event, making it a resounding success.

With its thought-provoking discussions, research presentations, and industry collaborations, PhilGEOS 2023 reaffirmed the vital role of geomatics in sustainable development. The symposium not only highlighted the latest advancements in the field but also inspired participants to explore innovative solutions to contemporary challenges. Its success reflects the growing commitment of the geomatics community to harness technology and research for a more sustainable and equitable future.
