WMSU Visits UP DGE for Educational Tour

Engagements, Partnerships
Martes, Hulyo 22, 2025
UP DGE welcomed students and faculty from Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) for an educational tour that showcased the department’s academic programs, facilities, and research projects in geodetic engineering.
The UP Department of Geodetic Engineering hosted an educational tour on July 4, 2025, for 36 visiting students and faculty from Western Mindanao State University (WMSU). This visit formed part of WMSU's broader educational immersion in Metro Manila, targeting institutions vital to the advancement of geodetic engineering in the country.
Held in the afternoon, the tour kicked off at the Maynilad Room, Melchor Hall, with an orientation about the department, including its undergraduate and graduate programs, spearheaded by Asst. Prof. Florence Galeon. The presentation offered a comparative academic overview, serving as a reference point for WMSU’s own curricular development.
The group then visited key DGE facilities: the Geo+SA Lab, where Dr. Rosalie Reyes and Asst. Prof. Luis Mabaquiao introduced current research on geospatial analytics; the Instrument Room, where Mr. Lowell Pernia discussed equipment and hands-on tools used in instruction; and the Smart Metro Office, where Engr. Dominic Fargas walked through the Smart Metro Project under Dr. Czar Jakiri Sarmiento, a collaborative effort between UP and local government units under TCAGP.
Throughout the visit, WMSU students gained exposure to real-world applications of geomatics, sparking interest in potential thesis topics, graduate studies, and careers in research. The visit directly aligns with SDG 4: Quality Education, fostering academic collaboration and inspiration for both institutions.
The department extends its thanks to all facilitators and the WMSU delegation, especially Engr. Jillian Glaze Sapalleda, WMSU’s DGE Unit Head, for making the visit a success.
