STUDENTS
The undergraduate and graduate students at the department excel through a curriculum that emphasizes both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in geodetic and geospatial engineering. These students engage through complex coursework and innovative research, and they also actively participate in a variety of extracurricular activities that complement their academic pursuits. This holistic approach enhances their educational experience and prepares them for diverse challenges in their future careers.

The BS Geodetic Engineering program has been historically one of the UP College of Engineering programs with the lowest freshman intake and smallest overall student population. Achieving around 500 enrollees at its maximum in Academic Year 2015-2016, UPDGE’s undergraduate program now has an average enrollment of 350 students, with a freshman intake of 75 students annually. In 2023, the Department made history with 68 graduates with honors, the highest in its history. This was also the first time it had summa cum laude graduates.
On the other hand, the MS Geomatics Engineering program has had an average enrollment of 84 in the same period, with the Geoinformatics track having the most enrollees, followed by Remote Sensing and Applied Geodesy.

Our students not only excel in the classroom, but also perform well in extracurricular and co-curricular activities such as local and international hackathon competitions (e.g., ASEAN Geospatial Challenge) and conferences, student organizations and councils, and sports (College-wide sportsfest, Engineering and UP Varsity, Southeast Asian Games). All these are a testament to UPDGE’s commitment to sustaining a conducive learning environment and a supportive community for our students to develop into well-rounded geodetic and geomatics engineering professionals who will be at the forefront of the field in the industry, academe, and government sectors.
¹ Last intake for the five-year BS GE curriculum.
² First intake for the four-year BS GE curriculum.
³ No GELE took place in 2020 due to the pandemic.
TOWNHALL MEETING
This is a regular consultation with students aimed at delivering updates about University, College, and Department activities and policies. We also touch base with our students to discuss their concerns and grievances to ensure that the Department delivers the support they need. Apart from this, the Department also conducts an alignment meeting with the Geodetic Engineering Representatives and student organizations to coordinate planned programs and activities for the semester.

SKILLS WORKSHOP
This provides additional opportunities for students to learn specific technical and soft skills usually not covered in their majors classes. Examples include effective data visualization and web mapping.

GEOMATICS STUDENT PROJECT COLLOQUIUM (GSPC)
Participated by undergraduate and graduate students, GSPC is a mini-conference organized to gather students to showcase their research, capstone, and map projects they conducted in their classes to the entire UPDGE community. This also provides an avenue for students to gain feedback from other faculty, researchers, and alumni to improve their work.

ARAW NG PARANGAL
This is an annual program organized by the Department to give recognition to students who excel in academic, leadership and service, and sports. Here we name the GE Model Student and other student excellence awardees, as well as recognize recent GE Licensure Examination passers.

DEPARTMENT-LED EVENTS FOR STUDENTS
STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS

GEODETIC ENGINEERING REPRESENTATIVES
The Geodetic Engineering Representatives are the official representation of the students of the UP Department of Geodetic Engineering in the Engineering Student Council. The GE Representatives amplify the voice of the DGE student body and provide basic student services catered to the needs of GE students. Its office prides itself on working for the benefit and interest of their constituents by championing pro-student initiatives.
The GE Representatives perform their duties through its student volunteer corps, the Students’ Initiative in Geodetic Engineering (SIGE). SIGE assists in the activities, projects, and events of the GE Representatives, and is the concrete manifestation of a student-led governance and representation.

UP GEODETIC ENGINEERING CLUB
The University of the Philippines Geodetic Engineering Club (UP GE Club) is a premier academic organization duly recognized by the UP College of Engineering. Established on August 15, 1937, just about two months after the founding of the UP Department of Geodetic Engineering, the organization has since then actively forwarded its goal of promoting proficiency and excellence in the field of geodetic engineering through various initiatives and events. As an academic organization, UP GE Club aims to promote and foster the development of geodetic engineering and science. It is home to academically excellent students in the Department and boasts of an alumni roster who are frontrunners in the geodetic engineering profession. With its manifold activities ranging from academic ones driven to promote scholastic excellence to socially relevant initiatives aimed at serving the people, the organization has continually amplified its legacy as a training ground for future leaders and nation builders.

UP SOCIETY OF GEODETIC ENGINEERING MAJORS
Established in 2000, the University of the Philippines Society of Geodetic Engineering Majors (UP GEOP) is a duly recognized student organization under the UP College of Engineering. It aims to promote honor, academic excellence, leadership, and service to the community. The organization prides itself in its roster of events, initiatives, and projects that are community-driven, embody honor and excellence, and show its members what it means to be a geodetic engineer. GEOPOTENTIAL, EngaGE, GROUNDED, and academic tutorials such as GEOPaturo and Freshen UP are some of the organization’s projects. For 23 years, UP GEOP has served as a home to geodetic engineering students, fostering harmonious relationships within the GE community.
