EVENTS
The department and training center regularly organize events that highlight advancements in geodeetic and geomatics engineering, as well as celebrate key milestones in the department’s journey. These activities include symposiums, workshops, training programs, and special gatherings that bring together experts from the academe, government, and industry.
PHILIPPINE GEOMATICS SYMPOSIUM (PhilGEOS)

The Philippine Geomatics Symposium (PhilGEOS) is the country’s premier conference on geospatial science and technology, organized by the UP Department of Geodetic Engineering. Since 2012, PhilGEOS has served as a platform for researchers, industry professionals, and policymakers to exchange knowledge and collaborate on advancements in surveying, remote sensing, GIS, and emerging geospatial applications.
Over the years, PhilGEOS has expanded its reach through international collaborations. Notably, the 2019 edition was co-organized with GeoAdvances, a biennial international workshop promoting advancements in geoinformation science and territorial management. This partnership strengthened PhilGEOS’s global engagement by facilitating cross-disciplinary exchanges with international experts. Additionally, PhilGEOS has collaborated with the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS) in select editions for the publication of conference proceedings in the ISPRS Archives, providing wider international visibility for research contributions presented at the symposium.
Each edition of PhilGEOS revolves around a key theme, addressing pressing societal and technological challenges, including disaster resilience, sustainability, urban development, and artificial intelligence in geospatial analysis:
-
PhilGEOS 2012 – Philippine Geomatics: Practice, Application, and Accomplishments
-
PhilGEOS 2013 – Geomatics for a Resilient Agriculture and Forestry
-
PhilGEOS 2014 – Enhancing Public Service with Geomatics
-
PhilGEOS 2015 – PhilGEOS GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems) and PhilGEOS UAS (Unmanned Aerial Systems Mapping)
-
PhilGEOS 2016 – Strengthening Geomatics Applications through Advanced Space Science and Technology
-
PhilGEOS-UAS MapS – PhilGEOS-Unmanned Aerial Systems Mapping Symposium
-
PhilGEOS 2017 – Geospatial Digital Data for Development (Geospatial 3D): Acquisition, Modeling, Analysis, Visualization, and Applications of 3D Data
-
PhilGEOS X GeoAdvances 2019 – Geomatics and Data Science: Towards Adaptive Management in a Changing World
-
PhilGEOS 2021 – Geomatics in the New Normal: Shifting Paradigms in a Changed World
-
PhilGEOS 2023 – Geomatics for Sustainable Development Towards a Better Future
PhilGEOS 2025: Enhancing Human Quality of Life through Geospatial Technologies
The upcoming PhilGEOS 2025 will focus on the role of geospatial technologies in improving human well-being, addressing societal challenges, and shaping sustainable development.
The UP Department of Geodetic Engineering (UP DGE) regularly holds Department Seminars as part of its commitment to advancing knowledge and fostering collaboration in geospatial science and technology. These seminars serve as a platform for faculty members, students, and invited guest speakers from the academe, government, and industry to share their expertise, present research findings, and discuss technological innovations in geodetic engineering and related fields.
Each seminar covers a diverse range of topics, including GIS and spatial data analytics, remote sensing for disaster risk reduction and environmental monitoring, surveying and geodesy for infrastructure and land administration, hydrography and marine geodetic innovations, smart cities and urban analytics, AI and machine learning in geospatial sciences, and policy and governance in geospatial data management. Recent seminars include:
-
50th – Mapping Floods Across the Globe: Using a Bayesian Algorithm, High-Performance Computing, and SAR Data Cubes – Asst. Prof. Mark Edwin Tupas
-
49th – VoyaGE: Journey to Marine Ingenuity – Van Oord
