The symposium seeks to engage the global land subsidence community in developing solutions and shaping a science-based, common strategy for North Manila Bay. It builds on the First National Expert Roundtable on Land Subsidence (Feb 2025) and is organized by the National Engineering Center at UP Diliman and Wageningen University & Research under the Drowning Deltas project funded by the Dutch Science Foundation (NWO).

First International Land Subsidence Symposium

Towards a common strategy for land subsidence in the northern Manila Bay area

20-22 April 2026

The First International Land Subsidence Symposium in the Philippines will gather international and national scientists, experts, practitioners, and decision-makers in Manila for a multi-day event. Beyond exchanging knowledge and fostering global learning and collaboration, the program includes a full-day field trip to North Manila Bay, highlighting the alarming impacts of accelerating land subsidence—exceeding 10 cm/yr in some areas—which increasingly exposes communities to flooding and tidal inundation.
