Recognition
Tuesday, December 9, 2025
MapaKomunidad, a CWTS 2 community mapping project of UP Diliman students, was recognized at Gawad NSRC 2025 for its data-driven support to Barangay Tatalon’s flood disaster risk reduction efforts.
MapaKomunidad, a community mapping project implemented by CWTS 2 classes during the 2nd Semester of AY 2024–2025, was recognized during the Gawad NSRC 2025 held on 03 December at the Asian Institute of Tourism, UP Diliman. The project was carried out in partnership with the Grotto Neighborhood Association of Barangay Tatalon, Quezon City.
The Gawad NSRC is the annual recognition program of the National Service Training Program (NSTP) and the National Service Reserve Corps (NSRC) of UP Diliman that honors outstanding projects from its 19 implementing units for their significant contributions to community development through innovation, collaboration, and meaningful impact.
MapaKomunidad was implemented by CWTS 2 classes handled by Asst. Prof. Jommer M. Medina and Inst. Roel T. Bahia, composed of students from the BS Geodetic Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Electronics Engineering programs, along with selected students from arts and humanities. The project focused on community asset mapping, flood hazard mapping, and flood exposure assessment to support disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) initiatives at the local level.
To strengthen community capacity, the project team conducted a map reading workshop and distributed information, education, and communication (IEC) materials. The project was implemented through close coordination with the community via focus group discussions and resident interviews, ensuring that local knowledge informed both the assessment and the outputs.
By the end of the project, maps, brochures, and posters were formally turned over to the community. The barangay later reported that these materials have been actively used in the formulation of a more localized and data-driven disaster response action plan.
Aside from the Department of Geodetic Engineering (DGE), projects from the Institute of Civil Engineering and the Department of Mining, Metallurgical, and Materials Engineering were also recognized during the ceremony.
