PH Geodetic Institutions Sign MMoU to Strengthen Global Geodesy

Partnerships

Monday, March 17, 2025

UP DGE and NAMRIA have joined 36 other agencies and organizations worldwide in signing a Multilateral Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen the Global Geodesy Supply Chain (GGSC). The agreement, announced on March 11, 2025, underscores international collaboration in sustaining geodetic infrastructure vital for navigation, disaster resilience, and climate action.

The UP Department of Geodetic Engineering (UP DGE) and the National Mapping and Resource Information Authority (NAMRIA) are among 38 global signatories to the Multilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MMoU) on Strengthening the Global Geodesy Supply Chain (GGSC). This initiative was formalized during the Joint UN-GGIM Subcommittee on Geodesy 5th Plenary and the 3rd UN-GGCE International Advisory Committee held in Bonn, Germany, on March 11, 2025.

The MMoU is a major step toward securing the long-term sustainability of the global geodetic infrastructure—a cornerstone of reliable positioning, navigation, Earth observation, and disaster response systems. The agreement aims to address critical gaps in capacity, funding, and policy by fostering collaboration among academic institutions, national mapping agencies, and international organizations.

Alongside the Philippines, agencies such as Geoscience Australia, the Chinese Society for Geodesy Photogrammetry and Cartography (CSGPC), National Land Survey (Finland), Bundesamt für Kartographie und Geodäsie (Germany), National Geographic Institute of Belgium, and Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) are part of this initiative. Major organizations like the International Association of Geodesy (IAG), United Nations Global Geodetic Centre of Excellence (UN-GGCE), and Sistema de Referencia Geocéntrico para las Américas (SIRGAS) also participated.

The involvement of UP DGE and NAMRIA reaffirms the Philippines’ commitment to advancing geospatial research, supporting geodetic innovation, and strengthening global partnerships. This move highlights the nation’s dedication to geospatial governance and the strategic use of geodesy in sustainable development, infrastructure planning, and resilience-building efforts.

Through this collaboration, the Philippines and fellow MMoU signatories are paving the way for a more connected and capable global geodetic community.
